A Beacon of Hope in the Darkness of Auschwitz

When World War II erupted, Father Maximilian faced immense suffering and persecution. Captured by the Gestapo in 1941, he was sent to Auschwitz, a harrowing Nazi concentration camp. Despite the brutal conditions, he continued to offer spiritual solace and hope to fellow prisoners.

During a punishment where ten men were selected to starve to death for a prisoner’s escape, Father Maximilian selflessly volunteered to take a doomed man’s place, exemplifying his sacrificial love and faith. Enduring starvation and dehydration for two weeks in a cell, he remained serene and prayerful, comforting his companions until his final moments.

The Ultimate Sacrifice and Canonization

On August 14, 1941, Father Maximilian Kolbe perished as the last survivor in that cell, willingly accepting a lethal injection as an act of selflessness and forgiveness. Canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1982, he is revered as the patron saint of prisoners, drug addicts, and the pro-life movement.
